All that needs to be known dwells inside your own heart.

Resistance is fueled by fear. Fear motivates us to seek safety and comfort. For many, food serves as a source of comfort, hence the term, ‘comfort food’. Similarly, knowledge serves as a source of comfort and can easily be referred to as ‘comfort knowledge’.

When fear enters your psyche, it’s natural to retreat to the safety net of avoidance. Avoidance is often cleverly disguised as the thought, “I just need to look for more information so that I can do xyz perfectly.” You’re doing your research; it feels safe.

The Internet is avoidance’s playground. It feels productive to be on this playground because you’re “doing” something, so guilt is temporarily masked.

But, at what point do you realize that you know enough – actually, more than enough?

You realize this the moment that you choose to value your intuition, to believe what you know to be true. Steer in this direction and your heart will sing. And that’s a very good thing.

When we let go of fear, we let in possibility.

This is beautiful, Carolyn. And yes, I believe all we need to know is in our heart…yet it is soooooo easy to be diverted, distracted by fear. I love the following quote, because it reminds me to let go of fear, and it’s kind of like your last line.

Letting go is the opposite of fearing death; it is trusting life. When we let go of something, our hand opens and we are able to receive. ~ Rolf Gates

What a great quote. I love how letting go is associated with trusting. It’s so true that we often hold ourselves back from receiving without even consciously knowing that we’re resisting the very thing that we want. Thank you for this beautiful reminder.

“The internet is avoidance’s playground” – Super interesting idea! It does feel semi-productive, even if you’re just clicking around. I had never thought about that before.

On another note, my aunt gave me a book once called The Gift of Fear. It talks about fear in a different sense than your post, but it’s interesting how we can feel our intuition and fears in our gut. The book is about tuning into your own body and trusting your instincts so that you know how to react to any situation you may find yourself in.

That is so interesting, Whit! There is a tool called the Body Compass Tool that is utilized for that exact purpose: to tune into your body and become aware of your feelings/instincts. Our body is the most reliable compass we have when it comes to emotions – and of course, the most accessible :)! Fear is incredible useful when we become aware of it and consciously respond to its signals rather than ignore the feeling and hit the Internet Playground!

Fully agree! I somehow find females more intune with their hearts than male. It took me a lot of “training” to get close to what my wife does intuitively. I’m still learning. :)

I love this post – I have an image of someone dipping a toe in the water, tentatively and then withdrawing, afraid to dive fully into her life to embrace it! Having faith that I’ve already been given the answers is difficult.

Your comment about the internet as avoidance is so true, and ironic in that so many things online are hard to avoid – reading the news reveals horrific stories that make me think about how damaged some people are and how sad that is; soon you feel trapped in a web of negativity that is hard to shake.

…Which is precisely why I now have uplifting blogs bookmarked instead of multiple news-sites; thank you for helping me with this positive change. :)

    Great post Carolyn :)
I find following your intuition is the best remedy, sometimes I feel like kicking myself when I don’t… that is usually followed by “coulda, woulda, shoulda”

Oh, this resonates with me today. I am one of those research junkies who read and study, and always feel I need to look outside myself for a “How-to manual.”

I have this quirky hang up of feeling like an imposter: “If they really knew me, they’d know I have no clue.”

I want to start trusting my instincts, my internal compass. But I’m afraid. You nailed it.

Thanks for putting into words what I’ve been avoiding to admit.
