Brilliantly Stated

I am a bit overwhelmed at the moment with course work and research. I spend most of my days reading articles and then twisting the articles around in my brain in order to build on previous research. As such, I have become quite skilled at finding and magnifying problems in the papers I read.

When taking a break from my work, I tend to read through blog posts in Google Reader. One of my favorite features to use in this application is the sweet little “like” button. I love how simple it is to share my appreciation with others (a click of a button, can it get easier!?). It feels so wonderful to surrender to the powerful force of positivity.

To continue this exercise of focusing on the positive, let’s pretend we’re back in kindergarten and enjoy a few minutes of show and tell blog style! Below are a few brilliantly stated excerpts that I’ve curated from various blogs.

The true harvest of my life is intangible. But every now and then I see it and feel it. And strongly, too. Every now and then life’s grays slide from the scene, and the color slaps me. Saturday was one of those times. I hung back, hand on my belly, feeling flutters from within, watching. Silently celebrating. Realizing that the true harvest of my life, my good and complicated life, is that I am part of things exquisitely bigger than myself.

A day. A season. A world. A life.

But most importantly: a family.

Normally when people say things like “just stop worrying about it” or “don’t worry so much”, I feel frustrated.

Because it’s not that simple. Definitely not for me. I can’t do it. I don’t know how. And it generally seems kind of violent.

Because the traditional ways of “DON’T WORRY!” tend to involve repressing or delegitimizing all the internal stuff that comes together to create anxiety.

It’s like fighting your monsters. Not recommended.

But when I bring in curiosity, I still get to interact with my small, scared, anxious parts. In fact, I get to interact with them even more.

Only now it’s in a way that’s receptive, non-judgmental, inquisitive, and caring. I’m not pushing the worry away. Just extracting its essence.

- The Fluent Self

The other thing that always surprises me is connected to this idea of ebb and flow: There always seems to be just enough creativity when it is needed. Whenever I am focusing on one thing, be it a blog post, cooking a meal or decorating a room, there’s always enough ideas for that one thing and – possibly more for others down the road, but usually I find it’s pretty focused to what’s at hand in the moment. In a way, I look at it as a sort of grace. Grace meaning in this context a Divine provision at the right time and in the right measure.

In a way, This is how the last few years of my life has been. I dream up a plan that works perfectly in my head (or in this case on my head) and I try to stay on that plan, only to watch the wind blow it down. Life tosses me a curveball and I have to make a choice — stay with the plan or go with the wind. Somedays I play it safe, I stick to the plan. Other days I go with the wind. To be honest, those are the better days. Those are the better choices.

If it’s for or against you, go where the wind takes you.

- Kendi Everyday

Running in the gray doesn’t mean jogging in cloudy weather. It means to stay out of the black and white zones, the all or nothing spots. It means to find a place where you are centered and, while hearing all the outside voices, you make a conscious choice about the ones that travel with you. It means finding your own balance, on your own road, on your own two feet. It means not giving up.

Here’s a line I noticed among the entries I have written that might be a little gem among the dust for someone out there-

“feel strength in the fact that in this world, you can’t be anyone’s copilot until you learn how to fly on your own.”
