Writing to Change the World
You write in order to change the world, knowing perfectly well that you probably can’t, but also knowing that literature is indispensable to the world….The world changes according to the way people see it, and if you alter, even by a millimeter, the way … people look at reality, then you can change it. —James Baldwin

Whenever I get overwhelmed or frustrated, I turn to my crowded bookshelf and open any book that grabs my attention. Recently, feeling overwhelmed, I reached for one of these books—Writing to Change the World: An Inspiring Guide for Transforming the World with Words by Mary Pipher. After opening the book, I focused on a quote highlighted in yellow and pink (two highlighters means serious business). This quote (above by James Baldwin) served as my companion while navigating the journey of writing my book. Reading the quote years later, I felt a sense of pride but more so of self-compassion. It connected me to a part of myself, the naive girl in me who dreamed bigger than big and never dared to question those dreams. I have missed that part of me. While one cannot erase experiences that cloud ignorant bliss, one can dare to challenge those past experiences and pave a new trail of wonder. Have you ever had a similar experience when going through old books or belongings?
