After talking about Ali Edwards in last month’s post, I realized that there are so many inspiring blogs—many that you may not know about. This month, I am sharing with you 5 blogs for journaling and story catching inspiration that I enjoy!

Color Me Happy: Pink Blush

February 10th, 2012 | 14 Comments »

While I normally work on these color boards for at least a week before posting (since I’m a newbie at photoshop and pretty much all things design/creative), I began this board yesterday. I thought it would be a great test to see how my skills and confidence have progressed (failed test!). I would love to fiddle around with this board some more, but will resist my perfectionist tendencies :).

For this color board, I chose pink blush. I have been so drawn to this soft color recently. And just so you know, I completely forgot when working on this board that next week is Valentine’s Day and everyone is experiencing pink + red overload. Hopefully, this board doesn’t scream Valentine’s Day and provides a quiet respite for your eyes and mind. Are you experiencing pink + red overload this week? What color is inspiring you?

p.s. i’m moving next week (to miami) and hope to continue posting as usual, but if I go missing, just know that I’m buried in boxes and wish i were here :).

Color Me Happy: Cantaloupe Orange

February 3rd, 2012 | 4 Comments »

The inspiration for this color mood board came from a recent episode of Project Runway. The contestants were challenged to design an outfit influenced by unique gelato flavors. Mondo, one of the contestants, chose cantaloupe gelato and I loved his creation! I hope you enjoy this color board and would love to hear what color is currently inspiring you :).

Color Me Happy: Mint

January 26th, 2012 | 12 Comments »

Mint green is such a bright and cheerful color. It’s hard not to smile in its presence. I had a lot of fun creating a minty ombre heart design against a natural linen canvas. I may use the ombre hearts for some Valentine’s Day fun as well :). I hope this burst of color brings a little smile to your day. What color is inspiring you lately?

Color Me Happy: Chartreuse

January 18th, 2012 | 4 Comments »

Confession: this color board was the hardest to create so far! Yet, it’s my absolute favorite to date :). Chartreuse is a tough color—with so many different shades between yellow and green. I found tons of images but as I put them together, the shades were totally off. As I worked on this board, I encountered an additional difficulty: completely forgetting the name of the color! After looking the name up about ten separate times, I finally wrote CHARTREUSE on a post-it note and stuck it on my computer (this did the trick!).

What I learned: this color is tough to design with for a novice like me (i.e., someone who calls it that crazy yellow-greenish color). To overcome my color knowledge deficit, I realized that the trick is to use this color to add an unexpected splash of cheer to a space or outfit. I adore the use of it in patterns (e.g., ikat, chevron, herringbone), especially for smaller accessories like throw pillows, jewelry trays, or tea towels. But to add a spectacular bold statement, I am loving the use of chartreuse to cover a sofa or even painting a door or wall in this gorgeous hue.

would love to know: love or hate chartreuse? what color is inspiring you this week?

Inspiration for 2012

January 2nd, 2012 | 15 Comments »

A new year has arrived and with it a beautiful opportunity to reflect on the past, be mindful of the present, and to manifest what you hope to cultivate over the next twelve months. But, as I shared in my first post of the new year, transitions can be difficult and rarely do they follow a prescribed path. We are each on a different journey and periods of universal transition (like a new year) can act as a trigger with a multitude of effects. Prior to sharing a little inspiring activity for 2012, I want to begin this post with a simple mantra, “everything will be okay.” This phrase is beautiful to whisper to yourself—on both easy and difficult days. It’s also perfectly fitting for however you may be feeling in relation to this new chapter, chapter 2012.

Inspiration for 2012

When thinking about the next twelve months, I find it helpful to switch my mindset to that of my future self. I first got this idea from my friend Jess Constable who writes an annual letter to her future self (highly recommend!).

STEP ONE: I begin by asking my future self (i.e., Carolyn + 12 months from today) for one word that has had significant meaning over the past year. In 2012, my one word is confidence. Ali Edwards recently posted a roundup of “one words” chosen by others that your future self may enjoy perusing :).

STEP TWO: After choosing one word as an anchor for 2012, I brainstorm 12 actions that align with the overall sentiment of this word. I jot down one action per month and put these actions on an index card in the front of my daily journal.

STEP THREE: This year, I’m going to further explore this activity by jotting down one positive action/experience/accomplishment after each month. Then, at the end of 2012, I will have created a personal positivity treasury with a record of positive moments to reflect upon. I really think this simply activity will be tremendously powerful.

Inspiring Downloads for 2012

Inspired by the one-word concept, I created a cheerful printable file for you to download. [download pdf]

I also created a printable document to serve as a visual reminder of this new journaling activity. I plan on keeping mine pinned to my inspiration board for easy reference and updating as the year unfolds. [download pdf]

How do you keep track of positive experiences and accomplishments throughout the year? If you’ve chosen one word for 2012, I would love to know what you’ve selected!

Color Me Happy: Ruby Red

December 22nd, 2011 | 2 Comments »

Ruby Red is one of my absolute favorite colors! I think that’s because people called me “ruby” when I was growing up (a shortened version of my very long last name!). Nonetheless, there is something about this color that adds a sense of surprise when used in small doses. For example, I love wearing a pair of red heels with jeans and a plain t-shirt. And when the Starbucks cups turn to red for the holidays, I get so giddy! Below is a ruby red mood board highlighting a few beautiful pieces of red inspiration. I hope you enjoy this festive board and are beginning to transition into a peaceful and relaxing holiday state of mind :).

One final note: this is my first mood board created in Photoshop! I’m still experimenting with the program and trying to learn as I go so hopefully these boards will improve each time!!

The Why of Desire to Inspire

December 19th, 2011 | 5 Comments »

Today’s guest post from Christine Mason Miller is particularly special for me and my blogging journey. Yesterday marked my 3 year blog anniversary! My first post was entitled Ordinary Sparkling Moments in honor of Christine’s book that inspired me to open Wordpress and begin a little online diary called A Beautiful Ripple Effect. Three years ago, I would never have imagined that I would get to meet and know the real Christine Mason Miller. She is a rare combination of powerful grace, creative genius, and kindness ambassador (oh and so much more, think superwoman, but with sparkly wings!). I hope she realizes how truly loved she is by so many and how grateful I am for the unconditional support she has given me over the years. She is one of my greatest role models. Christine’s beautiful guest post is below. Again, thank you Christine. You are an extraordinary sparkling woman!

The Desire to Inspire Book Launch celebration is now just over 48 hours behind me. Most of the houseguests who flew in from all over the globe have gone back home, beds are in disarray, and my dining room table still looks like it was taken over by Christmas elves on crack. There is not a single present under the tree yet, and my best friend is still here helping me wash dishes, pack orders and run errands. Traces of the celebration are everywhere, and the sense of exuberant giddiness that fueled all the weeks of planning is still with me. The night of the book launch I chose not to do a book reading or any kind of formal speech, but instead offered a brief but emotional thank you, sharing that this experience has been one of the most remarkable of my life. This book, these contributors, and every single moment of this extraordinary ride has been about many things at different times, but at its essence, just one:  JOY.

The first person to land at LAX for the festivities was Vineeta Nair, a contributor who flew in from Mumbai, India. She arrived Tuesday, and most everyone else was coming in the next day. That night, my husband and I took her out to dinner, and we had a discussion about entrepreneurship. The topic of Apple came up, and we all decided that the core of their success came from their unwavering focus on the why of what they did. Theirs was an empire built on a vision of what was possible – of presenting something to the world that the world did not yet know it would want or need or be endlessly inspired by. They did not do any test marketing; they did not take consumer polls. They created something they felt fiercely passionate about and the world was forever changed.

In any endeavor, it is easy to be clear on what I am doing, and my work is also to figure out how I will do it. But it is the why that compels me more than anything; without a solid foundation to support the motivation behind my actions – whether personally or entrepreneurially – I wouldn’t be able to get out of bed in the morning. The why is reason I do what I do, and this has always been so.

The book launch was an evening of celebration first and foremost. Held in a beautiful setting, this gathering of sixty or so guests – which included more than half of the nineteen contributors – was a living, breathing validation of the why of Desire to Inspire. That night, I only had access to all the conversations and moments that I was experiencing, but having talked to so many who were there since then, I am now developing a more well-rounded picture of the evening. And with every story I hear, with every glimpse I am given into the exchanges between my friends, I grow more confident that the intention I set at the beginning of this journey – which was to create and work and organize from a place of joy – worked. The why of Desire to Inspire was to create a substantive, meaningful exploration of all the ways one can construct a meaningful life, and to do this joyfully. Three nights ago, this why came to life, and created a tiny universe where everyone present had joy in their hearts yet still felt comfortable sharing intense stories of love and loss and walking through this world with one another.

I have known all along that I wanted this event to hold and support and encourage joy, but beyond that I was game for anything. Like always, what transpired was more beautiful than anything I could have imagined on my own, and that light will never fade – confirming that as long as I keep that why at the center of my compass, everything is good, and all is an adventure.

Color Me Happy: Winter Gray

December 14th, 2011 | 8 Comments »

In Boston, it feels like everyday is a gray day. The sun rarely shines in the winter. While gray is forever associated with shorter days and chilly temperature, I still adore the color and the coziness associated with its presence. I put together this color board about a month ago and enjoyed looking at it so much on my desktop that I completely forgot to post it! I hope it brings a sense of coziness to your day, regardless of the weather where you live. What is your cozy color?

ps: how do you spell “gray?” i googled the correct spelling and cannot find one spelling! grey or gray?
