Pen & Paper: A Creative Journaling Exercise for the New Year

A Creative Journaling Exercise for the New Year

As we start off the new year, it is a good time to take stock of where we are, where our thoughts are, and what we are feeling.

I found a fun way to document this on Ali Edwards blog a couple years ago, and love doing it every now and then to ground myself.

She called it ‘Naming Your Petals‘, which she came up with after her son brought home an exercise her did in school. I thought it was brilliant and got to work on my own straight away.

I named my petals back in 2009 (shown in my journal)—in this spread I printed the petal file Ali offered, and traced it onto a tea stained coffee filter, then cut it out.

For my latest petals (2012), I just printed out the petals and cut them out. I plan on adding them to my journal later, and writing a but more about each petal as I reflect upon it.

This is a great way to see how you have grown, where you are en route to your dreams, and balancing yourself when it becomes hard to decide what to focus on.

Go ahead and give it a try—read Ali’s post first, then create your own petals and start naming them. They can be big or small – there are no right or wrong answers here. They can be soul deep, or surface thoughts—just start by naming things that represent you NOW.

Once you have them named, take a day or two to just look at them every now and then, thinking about what they mean to you. Then sit down with your journal, and write a bit about each petal—here are some questions to help get your journaling started:

Overall…

  • What was the first petal you named? Why did it come to you so easily (perhaps this is something you self consciously need to focus on the most)?
  • What was the last petal you named? It is something you are avoiding? Something you don’t give enough thought to?
  • Did any petal surprise you?  If so, why?
  • Did any petal make you feel guilty? If so, why?
  • What order would you put your petals in, as far as importance to you and your well being?
  • Any petals you wish you could change now? Explain.
  • How do your petals tell your story?
  • Which petal do you wish you could pluck off?

For each petal…

  • What are your thoughts when reading what you wrote?
  • List three things that elaborate on each petal
  • Now write one sentence for each list item (this is a good way to jumpstart journaling)

Try and do the exercise again in a month or two and see the difference in where you are then.

Inspiration for 2012

January 2nd, 2012 | 15 Comments »

A new year has arrived and with it a beautiful opportunity to reflect on the past, be mindful of the present, and to manifest what you hope to cultivate over the next twelve months. But, as I shared in my first post of the new year, transitions can be difficult and rarely do they follow a prescribed path. We are each on a different journey and periods of universal transition (like a new year) can act as a trigger with a multitude of effects. Prior to sharing a little inspiring activity for 2012, I want to begin this post with a simple mantra, “everything will be okay.” This phrase is beautiful to whisper to yourself—on both easy and difficult days. It’s also perfectly fitting for however you may be feeling in relation to this new chapter, chapter 2012.

Inspiration for 2012

When thinking about the next twelve months, I find it helpful to switch my mindset to that of my future self. I first got this idea from my friend Jess Constable who writes an annual letter to her future self (highly recommend!).

STEP ONE: I begin by asking my future self (i.e., Carolyn + 12 months from today) for one word that has had significant meaning over the past year. In 2012, my one word is confidence. Ali Edwards recently posted a roundup of “one words” chosen by others that your future self may enjoy perusing :).

STEP TWO: After choosing one word as an anchor for 2012, I brainstorm 12 actions that align with the overall sentiment of this word. I jot down one action per month and put these actions on an index card in the front of my daily journal.

STEP THREE: This year, I’m going to further explore this activity by jotting down one positive action/experience/accomplishment after each month. Then, at the end of 2012, I will have created a personal positivity treasury with a record of positive moments to reflect upon. I really think this simply activity will be tremendously powerful.

Inspiring Downloads for 2012

Inspired by the one-word concept, I created a cheerful printable file for you to download. [download pdf]

I also created a printable document to serve as a visual reminder of this new journaling activity. I plan on keeping mine pinned to my inspiration board for easy reference and updating as the year unfolds. [download pdf]

How do you keep track of positive experiences and accomplishments throughout the year? If you’ve chosen one word for 2012, I would love to know what you’ve selected!

A Moment In Time

December 6th, 2010 | 9 Comments »

Throughout December, I will be sharing my personal responses to the prompts of Reverb10. To read more about Reverb10 and how my journey began, you can read this post.

Prompt #3: Moment.
Pick one moment during which you felt most alive this year. Describe it in vivid detail (texture, smells, voices, noises, color).
(Author: Ali Edwards)

The Moment: When I saw my husband for the first time on our wedding day. We saw each other for the first time at the ceremony after I walked down the aisle. This is the moment that I will cherish forever.

I have tried so many times to capture the words to describe this magical moment. But the experience is still marinating within me — I can’t describe it with enough distance just yet (and would be okay if I never do – it’s sacred). However, I will share with you some rough notes from my journal so I don’t avoid this prompt due to the need to find the “perfect” words.

I felt the most incredible sense of joy coupled with a wave of peace. All I could see were his eyes looking into mine — everything in the periphery vanished. It was a moment unlike any I’ve ever experienced. I felt immense gratitude for everything in my past, the good and the not so good, because in one way or another it all led me here — to this moment.

I asked my husband to reflect on this moment from his perspective.

I know that there was a lot of commotion around me — the clicking from people taking pictures, the videographer and photographer moving around, the small whispers and buzzing, the orchestra playing music — and I know this because I took it all in after I walked down the aisle first. But for about a minute, all that stopped — there was one clear and single scene in my world — my beautiful bride walking down the aisle. All I could focus on was each step that she took towards me and towards our new life together. Words cannot express the joy that I was feeling. And at that moment when I lifted her veil and saw her eyes, i felt nothing but pure bliss — pure joy — pure love. The connection we had was beyond anything we’ve ever experienced.

What would be your one moment? If you’re participating in #Reverb10, please let me know in the comments so I can share in your journey as well!

Sweet and Simple Monday

February 2nd, 2009 | 4 Comments »

A week ago, I wrote about my new love of “Monday.” Well, I’m still in love :).

Today, I am much more aware of the little voice inside that says, “Monday should be full of chaos and rushing.” I make it a point to slow down and start the week off on a calm and positive note. I’m still busy working, but I am much more focused and don’t feel the strong urge to multitask.

Wishing you a sweet and simple Monday!
