One Positive Thought

September 9th, 2011 | 7 Comments »

The air is heavy this weekend. For many, this weekend symbolizes the day their lives changed forever—in a single moment. When it comes to talking about September 11th, I notice that the media is focusing on fear, loss, and general sadness/negativity. I got sucked into this mentality and avoided thinking about how I could bring up this day on my blog. I’m not sure what/if other bloggers will be reflecting on this day over the weekend. So far the topic has been mostly absent within my google reader feed.

It’s hard to discuss something that means something different to each individual. Yet, when something feels difficult to talk about (e.g., “I don’t know what to say” or “I’m sure others have already discussed this so what is there for me to add?”), it’s usually a sign (at least for me) that saying something is better than nothing — just showing up and acknowledging the emotions at play. There is no “right” thing to say. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t show up.

This weekend, I am going to show up. I am going to journal one positive thought as I light a single candle in honor of those who are desperately lacking light.

And to stay true to my blog’s core purpose: to create a beautiful ripple effect of inspiration one person at a time, I invite you to help me create this ripple effect by taking a moment this weekend to put a positive thought into the world and/or light a single candle to signify hope and light. With so much sadness coupled with fear and negative media, I believe in using the power of positivity to combat the negativity.

Will you help me create this beautiful ripple effect?

How to Embrace an Attitude of Gratitude: 16 Quotes to Help You Refocus on the Positive

November 28th, 2010 | 24 Comments »

As we enter a new month (can you believe it’s almost December!?), I thought it would be great to refocus on the positive – always a nice thing to do regardless of the month or the day of the week!

Rather than muse on and on about this topic, I’ve curated a few powerful quotes that I hope will help strengthen this attitude of gratitude.

Mindful Reading Tip! Try reading the quotes slowly. Allow your eyes to gently soften then close after you read each one, visualizing the words and what they mean to you. Just like a delicious piece of cake that you want to savor! But not all cakes are created equal, so taste this collection and notice if one outshines the rest. Then, sit with that quote for a couple of minutes and let its words work their magic! Below are 16 curated quotes just for you!

You’ve done it before and you can do it now. See the positive possibilities. Redirect the substantial energy of your frustration and turn it into positive, effective, unstoppable determination.

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.
- Melody Beattie

Instead of thinking about what you’re missing, try thinking about what you have that everyone else is missing.
- Unknown

These then are my last words to you. Be not afraid of life. Believe that life is worth living and your belief will help create the fact.
- William James

Let us be grateful to people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.
- Marcel Proust

Gratitude is the most exquisite form of courtesy.
- Jacques Maritain

Positive anything is better than negative nothing.
- Elbert Hubbard

When you get into a tight place and everything goes against you, till it seems as though you could not hold on a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn.
- Harriet Beecher Stowe

No one is as capable of gratitude as one who has emerged from the kingdom of night.
-Elie Wiesel

Gratitude is when memory is stored in the heart and not in the mind.

Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not.
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

How easily we get trapped in that which is not essential — in looking good, winning at competition, gathering power and wealth — when simply being alive is the gift beyond measure.
- Parker J. Palmer

How to Create a Positivity Treasury

In last Monday’s post, 9 Methods to Use When Returning to Normal, I mentioned one method that could be used to motivate yourself — a personal treasury.

After I wrote the post, I thought to myself, “now what?” I didn’t know the answer. “A personal treasury” filled with positive stuff — sounds perfect, but then why is it rarely utilized?

Two big reasons:
1) It’s a broad concept. We can mentally attack it from different angles. When you think, positivity treasury, your thoughts can go anywhere — particularly, what a waste of time — I know what makes me happy.

2) Why recreate something that’s been done countless times? There are entire blogs focused on positivity, books focused on the topic, tv shows. If “Oprah” says this list will make me happy, then it will make me happy — no questions asked.

If you either never experience a moment of emotional imbalance or have created a perfect system to keep your emotions in balance, then this post isn’t for you. Hmmm… not sure you’re human if you fell into that group.

“Now What?”

Let’s get back to the basics. There are millions of resources online and offline. So what’s the problem? One missing ingredient: how.

How do we filter through these resources and decide which are valuable to us and further — when are they valuable?

How can we create a personal treasury of positivity that can be utilized at any time — much like a custom first-aid kit? Always ready and available.

I will dedicate a new section of the blog to this project and would love to hear your feedback as we move forward together.

Next step: I will present general ideas and a breakdown of the project. That will be followed by a guided worksheet — fun and creative! And then a fun little booklet for you to download and use to document your own personal positivity treasury.

Positivity Treasury — What are your thoughts?

Happy 50th blog post!
